Andning Med-new company in KTH Holding’s portfolio

KTH Holding has invested in Andning Med AB, a company that develops intuitive smart devices to help patients inhale their medication correctly. Andning Med focuses on COPD – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – that in Sweden affects 700 000 people. These patients use inhalers every day, but most of them make critical errors in their inhalation technique, leading to an insufficient dose of medicine in their lungs.

The team behind Andning Med consists of an engineer, designer, doctor and business developer, who experienced first-hand how difficult it is to maintain the correct inhalation technique, especially for elderly. Even if learned successfully, the correct technique slips from peoples’ mind after several months and patients need to be taught again. Andning Med developed a new product that is attached to the patient’s inhaler and guides through all steps of correct inhalation, giving feedback on performance and encouraging improvement every time the patient uses their inhaler. Patients can also track their performance over time and share data with caregivers through a mobile application. By daily guidance from the device the patients can easily manage their technique without nurses’ intervention.

“The investment from KTH Holding gave us more than monetary support, it is the fantastic environment of smart and dedicated people at KTH, network of investors and expertise in driving tech businesses that comes with it. We will use the investment for testing the product with patients as well as co-financing strategic grant funding. KTH is a strong brand that opens doors and we are proud to be part of it.” says Petra CEO of Andning Med

Andning Med is a spin-off from the Clinical Innovation Fellowships program run at KTH. Here, multidisciplinary teams are put together to identify and solve problems in healthcare. During 8 weeks the team followed doctors, nurses and patients in primary care clinics in Tiohundra, Norrtälje, and observed how common the incorrect inhalation was. The idea and technology were then further developed with the support of KTH Innovation and the project was accepted into the KTH Innovation pre-incubator program. After completing this program, where Andning Med developed and tested their first product, KTH Holding now chose to invest in the company and support their journey to the market. Andning Med has recently been accepted to the incubator STING, one of Europe’s leading business incubators and a partner to KTH for building growth companies out of KTH startups.

“The team behind Andning Med has an extremely clear vision to help patients breathe easier. The market is very large and global with over 300 million people suffering from COPD. In addition, there are millions of people suffering from asthma as a future opportunity. Digital health solutions enabling patients to manage their medication and treatment by themselves at home are becoming increasingly important. This represent an interesting business opportunity and an important area for future healthcare. Andning Med is a company we are excited to invest in and support further”, says Daniel Carlsson, investment manager at KTH Holding AB.

Andning Med has currently developed and tested prototypes with users, especially focused on elderly patients. They have established good relations with various patient associations and healthcare providers with the goal to carry out clinical tests to support the further development and have a product on the market during 2023.
